*VERY RARE* 1958 Zenith S.58 Mark 1 | “Scaphandre” | Cal. 120 | With Original Strap and Buckle

WHY IS THIS WATCH IMPORTANT

Rarely do we encounter and present a watch that truly distinguishes itself from the rest, and this is one of those remarkable moments. Zenith unveiled the S.58 diving watch in 1958. While the precise origin of the S.58 name remains uncertain, it is thought to derive from "Super Water Resistant" or perhaps "Scaphandre," the French term diving suit.

The S.58 model was manufactured in four distinct versions, each featuring a different mechanism. The initial Mk1 variant boasted a Zenith caliber, the manual wind cal. 120. Subsequent Mk2-Mk4 iterations utilized automatic mechanisms. While all S.58 models are considered rare, the Mk1 stands out as the most elusive. Its production spanned only from 1958 to 1959, lasting less than two years. Though the exact production quantities remain unknown, these watches are seldom found on the market.

This specific piece, bearing the case serial number 9436xxx, is among the earliest examples produced. Therefore, it represents not only the initial reference but likely also one of the first batches manufactured.

REMARKS

Collectors have been extensively discussing and researching these watches, with limited information available. It's believed that 2,500 pieces were produced, all of which were purchased by Cairelli in Rome for the Italian navy without hesitation. Two years later, an automatic model was introduced, although no documentation has been found to confirm this theory.
